Mainie Jellett and Landscape in Context with Dr Yvonne Scott- Culture Night

Friday, September 23, 2022

Dr Yvonne Scott presents an insightful look into Mainie Jellett’s Coastal Scene with Path and her intriguing practice and process

Mainie Jellett and Landscape in Context – an illustrated lecture

The Drogheda Municipal Art Collection includes a compelling, naturalistic painting of a local landscape by Mainie Jellett: Coastal Scene with Path (gouache on paper, 23 x 35 cm, undated). It is an unusual work by an artist best known for her cubist abstractions, but could be the starting point – a study – leading to one of the artist’s best-known paintings. This illustrated talk explores the image in comparison with other work by Jellett, and in the context of alternative approaches to landscape painting in Ireland.

Dr Yvonne Scott is Fellow Emerita, and former Associate Professor of Art History at Trinity College Dublin.

Her publications and research are focused primarily on approaches to the representation of landscape, nature and environment, and she has published extensively in this field. She is the co-editor of a book entitled Irish Art 1920–2020: Perspectives on Change, currently being published by the Royal Irish Academy (2022).
