For over 350 years, art lovers have been fascinated by Las Meninas. This complex oil painting by Diego Velázquez is an incredibly nuanced depiction of life in the court of King Philip IV of Spain. Perhaps one of the most important paintings in all of Western art history, this masterpiece from 1656 continues to influence artists today including artist Andrew Vickery whose work is currently on display at Highlanes Gallery.
Pablo Picasso was particularly enamoured with Las Meninas, and painted 58 variations on the work in 1957. Salvador Dalí painted his own homage to the work in 1958 with a piece titled Velázquez Painting the Infanta Margarita With the Lights and Shadows of His Own Glory. Las Meninas is a large canvas which shows Infanta Margaret Theresa, the king’s daughter, surrounded by her entourage as artist Velázquez stands behind an easel painting her portrait.
Andrew Vickery too has been inspired, and has made a simple but stunning work on paper, inspired by a memory of visiting the Prado and seeing Las Meninas.
In this workshop, join Julie reflecting briefly on the artwork itself, its influence on artists and art, and have a go at making your own Infanta (infant) with materials from around your house. If you’re working with younger children and/or wish to take part please view the video in advance to help prepare yourself and note the following materials to have prepared;
Card (plain A4, or from cereal box etc)
Plastic bottle (water/soft drink etc.)
Pencil (plain and colours) (optional)
Scissors
Tissue paper/ wrapping paper
Glue stick or Masking tape or Sellotape (or Super Glue if parent/guardian assisting)
Paint (water based) (optional)

It is shorter than a real time workshop which would normally be 1 hour 30 minutes, but you can stop and start the video at stages so that children can take part slowly and reflectively with the session.
