The Old Grain store, Louisburgh

Pat Griffith completed many works for the Old Head Hotel in Louisburgh, Co. Mayo, which was run by the Wallace family. It’s possible The Old Grainstore, Louisburgh was part of these commissions. The detailed underdrawing of the store at the bottom of the gaden is apparent immediately, and the careful drawing and rending of accurate perspective and receding horizontal lines is balanced in the composition by upright winter trees. Griffith has used gouache paint sparingly, allowing the buff tone of the pastel paper to shine through. Just a few brush strokes of bluish-white in the sky, on the stone wall and the barn door, with a few white highlights and brown shadows on the ground and trees, completes the works.
