Mardi Gras

‘Mardi Gras’ was probably painted in the period 1925-30, when Guinness had absorbed all the influences of Fauvism and Cubism and was confident in her own depiction of the figure. In these fancy-dress figures are hints of Dufy and Marie Laurencin, but the artist’s enjoyment in rendering the paint on canvas overrides any strict artistic theories or rigorous composition.
