Holroyd was influenced by the tradition of Northern European Renaissance painters, especially in his etchings, which show an emphasis on accuracy and realism. The contrast of the freely painted Cornish Landscape to his black-and-white etchings is remarkable. In this work, Holroyd is informed by the colour and the composition of the French Post-Impressionists, but with a suggestion of Italian influence in the tonal qualities and the paint handling.
