Flower Painting (Pansies)

Grace Henry

b. 1868 - d. 1953
1912 Oil on panel

The play of light on the botanically correct Pansies, painted in soft tones of yellows, instills the work with a unique calmness. There is a reference to Degas in the cropped mahogany table in the foreground, while the blue-and-white bowl suggests the Japanese influence in French painting in the early nineteenth century.

An oil still-life painting of white flowers in a blue and white bowl set against a yellow background. The flowers are reflected in the surface of an oval table sitting beneath the bowl.
