A March Snowfall is captured delicately from the window of Coolock House, Co. Dublin, with the winter shadows of the bare, spindly trees casting reflections on the virgin snow. The trees’ unadorned trunks and branches stretch upwards against a grey-blue sky. The middle distance, in tones of grey merging into blues, acts as a foil between sky and foreground, creating a perfectly balanced painting. Colvill’s love of sketching from nature is very apparent in this work.
