Watery Watercolours!

Paint & fluidity, flexibility and fun.

Two watercolours by two giants of 20th century art offer artist Claire Halpin ideas for this fresh and free workshop that is not just perfect for children, but for adults.

A Children’s Practical Workshop facilitated by artist Claire Halpin and considering two works in the Drogheda Municipal Art Collection, The Twelve Pins by Sylvia Cooke-Collis (b. 1900 – d. 1973),, Watercolour on paper, Landscape (1930) by Richard Caulfield Orpen, (b. 1863 – d. 1938),
and Bathing in the Dodder, by Nano Reid (1945) (b. 1900 – d. 1981), Watercolour on paper

The Twelve Pins’, painted in watercolour, displays the translucency of the medium. Possibly painted in situ on a trip to Connemara, Cooke-Collis’ interpretation of the foreground rocks and distant peaks is more focused on pattern-making than on being a realistic rendition of the scene before her easel.

In Landscape, Orpen has achieved space and distance using naturalistic colours on tinted paper to depict the seashore and distant headland, with a billowing white cloud above. This sensitively painted view is probably somewhere in Co. Donegal, his most frequented location for painting en plein air.

Bathing in the Dodder is a freely painted watercolour in which the figures are discernible, but the composition is more abstracted and the artist is more interested in the patterns being created.
