Join us on Saturday October 3rd at 3pm for the debut launch of musicians Sárán Ó Maolagáin & Muirine Nic Róibín’s album –Thugamar an Ghrian Abhaile Linn.
Translated literally from Irish to English as ‘we brought the sun home with us’, it is a celebration of the journeys made as musicians; whether it’s the journey to the session, the house-dance, or further afield. The 11-track album comprises entirely original music except track 5, Où t’en vas-tu?, by French clarinettist and accordionist, Frédéric Paris.
The opening track An Gasúr Fiosrach, a tune written for Sárán’s nephew, Ferdia, is a contemplative, meandering piece played on chordal concertina and resonating Hardanger d’Amore. Later in the album, The Mid-European Pre-Jousting Céilí is a topsy-turvy dance which builds throughout, with dense woody instrumentation – concertina, fiddle, clarinet, bouzouki, tenor guitar, banjo and double bass.
Having performed the tunes on this album together many times, it comes to life anew with the contributions of the extraordinarily talented guest musicians: Macdara Ó Faoláin on bouzouki, John McCann on accordion, Ciarán Slattery on banjo and tenor guitar, Tadhg Ó Maolagáin on bouzouki, Dave Sheridan on flute and dordrán, and Conal Duffy on double bass. The making of this album really felt like a collaboration of creative minds and in-the-moment ideas. The album was funded by the Arts Council Deis Recording Publication Award 2026.
