The Dawn Chorus – Parent & Toddler Print Workshop

Tuesday, August 15, 2023

A Gallery-based workshop led by artists Caoimhe O’Dwyer and Jennifer Slater

Younger children and their parents/guardians will create prints using carved lino stamps, inspired by garden birds and the local flora and fauna from Co. Louth.

Using the art form of printmaking we can focus your toddler’s attention on shape, pattern and texture. Traditionally used as a form of communication in all parts of the world, printmaking is an ideal art activity for early years. It allows chlidren to try out a new technique and see cause and effect in action and engages fine motor skills.

This workshop is inspired by the dawn chorus, the outbreak of birdsong we hear in the morning. Birdsong, like Els Dietvorst’s work, is all about communication and relationships, defending their territory and raising their chicks.

Birds use song and a variety of movements and gestures to connect with each other. This form of physical communication is known as display. We will look at birds in different shapes and forms in their native habitat perceived through the aural landscape of the dawn chorus.
