Shaping Reid – Ms Sutton’s Influence on Nano
Nano Reid (1900 – 1981), Drogheda’s most famous daughter is one of the most important Irish artists of the 20th century, and whose work and archive Highlanes Gallery are delighted to hold in its Collection.
On the occasion of the exhibition Cultural Views from the Water’s Edge, join Community Historian, the exhibition’s co-curator, for an insight into Nano’s early life in Drogheda, and the important influence of her art teacher, Ms Sutton, who arrived to Drogheda, shortly after Nano’s birth, in 1904, and who, over the following 30 years or so, she played a significant role in the teaching of art of children and young people across County Louth.
‘Reid is awarded a prize and 2s/6d for ‘object drawing and memory drawing’ in the County Show in September. She competes as an under-16 candidate despite having turned 16 several months before. Reid is a student at the Sienna Convent but has been taught art as an extra-curricular subject by Miss Sutton from the Technical School. It is the first of several prizes she is to win locally in the coming years; she will go on to receive regular awards at the Annual Drogheda Agricultural Show.’
