My socially engaged art practice – Anthony Haughey meets Teenagers and Young People 16+

Saturday 6th June 2.30-4pm

The session aims to empower young people to understand and engage in their own artistic development.

An introduction to his socially engaged art practice as Anthony Haughey discusses his professional practice and projects in a slide show presentation and Q&A, as well as a series of group discussions with teenagers and young creatives.

Anthony Haughey is an artist and academic whose interdisciplinary practice spans photography, moving image, installation, and socially engaged art. His work critically examines identity, memory, migration, and the politics of place, often developed in collaboration with communities and individuals affected by displacement and social injustice.

ABOUT

Anthony Haughey’s practice is underpinned by sustained academic research, and he contributes regularly to critical discourse on photography, socially engaged art, and memory politics. He serves on the editorial board of Photographies (Routledge) and is co-editor of the forthcoming publication Contemporary Socially Engaged Art Practice in Ireland: Modalities and Counternarratives (Cork University Press, 2026).

From 2021 to 2024, he was Artist-in-Residence at the National Museum of Ireland as part of the Decade of Centenaries programme. He completed the Creative Places Athy: Connect & Gather artist residency (2024–2026), establishing Art House – a collaborative gallery and workshop space on Athy’s high street that supports socially engaged and community-based art practices. Continued funding has been secured to sustain and further develop this prototype model and to support future artist commissions.
