About Sahoko Blake
I am Japanese and I studied art literature & fine art. I moved to Ireland in 1996, I was first introduced to scuba diving when I was 18 and living in Tokyo. It was a world away from the flashing lights and the urban chaos. Disappearing beneath the surface took me into another world, their world, where I was a guest and I was taught to understand that. My relationship with the sea and its inhabitants – creatures, plants, pebbles etc – has been one of enormous fulfilment & wonder over the past 34 years. Never a day goes by when I don’t go to visit the sea, to refresh my spirit and draw inspiration for my art.
My practice in the main revolves around oil paintings, charcoal drawings and detailed pencil works. Although I have engaged in painting the rural landscape, and bogland in particular, I find myself again and again on a never ending pilgrimage back to the sea. It’s not an unknown or foreign place to me, I feel completely at home on or beneath the waves. My endeavour is to preserve the finest details, textures and luminosity in the myriad creatures to be found there. Most of all I want to my work to be a respectful homage to their very existence.
