Huaquitos – Culture Night Family Workshop with Adriana Torress Escobedo

Families with children 8+ can connect on this intergenerational somatic activity.

Huaquitos: Create Your Own Personal Interpretation is a participatory ceramic workshop that invites families with children over 8 years to engage with an ancient Peruvian ceramic tradition through contemporary making.

Rooted in storytelling and form, founder and ceramic artist Adriana Torress Escobedo will lead the session where culture, memory, and creativity meet.

This workshop is limited to 1 parent and two children per family group.

Please follow the guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable session for all attendees.

Context: Huacos are ancestral ceramic vessels created by pre-Columbian cultures of Peru. Beyond their functional role, they served as expressive objects—representing animals, human figures, rituals, and everyday life. Their distinctive asa estribo (stirrup handle) is both structural and symbolic, making each piece instantly recognisable. Today, huacos continue to represent a strong connection to identity, heritage, and the continuity of making across generations.

What can you expect? Families with children 8 years and over are invited to create their own huaquito—a small, personal interpretation of the traditional form. Guided through a hands-on process, they will shape, model, and construct their piece using red clay, focusing especially on the integration of the asa estribo, the defining element of the form.

The session encourages intuitive making, imagination, and problem-solving, while introducing participants to thinking in three dimensions. It is both a creative and reflective experience, where each piece becomes a unique expression of personal narrative.

All works will be bisque fired after the workshop, resulting in a finished object with a warm, natural surface—an artefact to collect from the gallery in the weeks following to remember the experience.

This workshop is free as part of Culture Night 2026, however booking is mandatory as places are limited.
