A Painter Among Writers: Nano Reid and the Literary World of the Mid-Twentieth Century by Dr Conor

Nano Reid was often a painter among writers in Dublin during the crucial decades of her artistic career from the 1930s to the 50s. Her apartments in Pembroke Street and Fitzwilliam Square became a focal point for poets and authors, along with other artists. Major literary figures championed her painting including Liam O’Flaherty, Seán O’Faoláin, and John Betjeman. She wrote and was written about in the literary periodicals of the day such as The Bell and Envoy, and she illustrated publications for W.B. Yeats, Máirtín Ó Direáin, and Patricia Hutchins. This talk explores Reid’s engagement and influence in the literary world of Dublin during the midtwentieth century, and considers the publishing contexts that shaped how her art was articulated and promoted in these years.

Conor Linnie joined the School of English, Drama and Film in UCD in 2019 after previously teaching in the School of English, Trinity College Dublin. His Irish Research Council funded postdoctoral project explores the inter-arts networks of British and Irish periodical culture after the Second World War. He has curated various digital humanities projects including the digital exhibition The Poetics of Print: The Private Press Tradition and Irish Poetry, launched in association with the School of English and the Library of Trinity College Dublin. His research interests are in twentieth-century literature and the arts in Britain and Ireland, with a particular focus on modernism, print culture, poetry and painting.
