3D Gallery Model – exploring maelstrom: Mid-term Teenager Workshop

Wednesday 29th October

1:30pm to 3:00pm

Ideal for teens aged 13-18 years.

Join artist and gallery assistant James Sherlock for a midterm workshop where he focuses on understanding how artist Maud Cotter explored and responded to the unique space of Highlanes Gallery, a former Franciscan church, and its architecture in her exhibition maelstrom.

After a brief discussion on how Maud attentively uses the space of the lower gallery and how and why the pieces are placed and sometimes intersect, James will also discuss the different ways visitors interact with the space when viewing the works, in particular maelstrom and breathturn.

After this, you will build a basic 3D replica model of a quarter section of the lower gallery space to include maelstrom intersecting both sets of pillars.

Using a painted wooden base and styled air-dry clay for pillars, getting closer to a scaled version of the space, teenagers will gain insight into ideas around three dimensions and response to positive and negative space. Attendees will get to work with materials like paint, yellow lens tape and silver foil and card, as they recreate the space, and some aspects of Maud’s exhibition, and where they can also imagine a work of their own within the space, or create a visitor(s) to place in their model.

Workshops are for teens aged 13 – 18 yrs and charged at €8 per attendee.
