Deirdre

Inscription on the base: “And death should be a poor untidy thing though it’s a queen that dies And it’s cold your arms will be this night that were warm about my neck so often” [J.M.] Synge In Deirdre, there is a suggestion of Rodin in the head emerging from the unfinished clay, but there is at the same time an undeniable essence of Irishness in the subject matter and the incorporation of J.M. Synge’s poetic lines. O’Connor’s inspiration for this work stemmed from the romanticism of a new, emerging Ireland, which was being explored and expressed in the writings of W.B. Yeats and Synge.
