Silent Pews – Living Art: The story of Highlanes Gallery

Friday 1st May at 11am

Presented by Brendan Matthews.

The story of Drogheda & the North East’s Municipal Art Gallery is one of vision, persistence, and a deep community belief in the value of the visual arts.

From the establishment of the Drogheda Municipal Art Committee in the mid-1940s to the opening of the magnificently transformed Highlanes Gallery in 2006, the journey reflects decades of cultural commitment within the town.

What began as an aspiration for a permanent public art space ultimately found its home within the historic walls of the former Franciscan Church on Laurence Street — a building whose own story stretches back nearly two centuries.

Community Historian Brendan Matthews has been researching the history & stories behind the Drogheda Municipal Art Collection and the Highlanes Gallery, covering everything in between the founding of the collection in 1945 to the opening of the gallery in 2006.

Join us in marking Highlanes Gallery’s 20th year with a historic journey through memory lane by Brendan, and how from monastic devotion to artistic expression, the legacy entrusted to the people of Drogheda continues to inspire residents and visitors alike.

From Silent Pews to Living Art — a vision realised, and a legacy that endures.

Places are limited and priced at €6

Tea, coffee and biscuits will be served.
