Hamilton mainly painted landscapes, usually on the spot, using bold brushwork and a palette knife to create heavy impasto, wtih an emphasis on light and colour as, for example, in her later work, Under the Mountains of Mayo. This freely painted, realisistic landscape depicts a traditional thatched cottage, with tall hay sheds behind and, further back, the imposing mountains. The artist uses white in abundance, allowing light to bounce throughout the painitng in a watercolour technique.
