Sir Charlres Holroyd was born in Leeds. He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art and at University College, London. He exhibited frequently at the Royal Academy (RA) and at the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. He also exhibited etchings at the Royal Society of Painter Etchers of which he was a Fellow. He was a Keeper of the Tate Gallery, London, from 1897 to 1906 and Director of the National Gallery, London, from 1906 to 1916.
