This is a portrait of an officer, probably a subaltern of the Louth Regiment of the Irish Militia, raised in 1793. The single epaulette indicates an infantry company, while the silver belt-plate and buttons bear the name 'LOUTH' surmounted by a crown. The belt-plate shows a shamrock, the buttons the letter 'M'. The work was purchased with the aid of the Friends of the National Collections of Ireland.
