Oil on Canvas Dimensions: 61 x 91.6 cm Provenance: Sligo Municipal Art Collection at the Model Arts and Niland Gallery, Gift of Mrs V. Franklin, 1959.
This work on loan from the Sligo Muncipal Art Collection depicts the funeral of the republican member of the Dail, Harry Boland, killed in controversial circumstances during the Irish Civil War at Skerries, Co Dublin. We are looking towards the grave, complete with flowers bedecked with the Irish tricolour, members of Cumann na mBan - the women's branch of the IRA look on reverentially at the entombment of Boland, in the shadow of the O'Connell Monument. The sense of pathos prevails, as another Irish hero is laid to rest in Glasnevin's 'Republican Plot'.
