Relief sculpture is built up in layers on a flat ground.

Some artists, for example Mantegna, have imitated relief sculpture in their paintings, or included imitation reliefs.

High relief refers to the sculpture in which the figures are cut almost entirely in the round - a type of sculpture which became popular in the 17th century.
