Richard Caulfeild Orpen was an architect and water colourist. He was the eldest brother of Sir William Orpen, one of Ireland’s most important painters and uncle to Bea Orpen, founder of the Drogheda Municipal Collection. He was educated at St. Columba’s College, Dublin where he later taught as art master. 

Orpen exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA) and the Water Colour Society of Ireland (WCSI). He held office as governor and guardian of the National Gallery of Ireland and Visitor to the to the RHA School, being elected to the RHA in 1912.
